The two sentences that decide what you can tidy up before selling

There is no Rolex document you can order about your own watch, and no serial lookup on rolex.com. What Rolex does publish is two flat refusals, and between them they settle most of what sellers worry about.

On a lost card: "The Rolex guarantee card cannot be re-issued under any circumstances." On the name printed on it: "The name of the original purchaser cannot be changed under any circumstances."

Read those together and two things follow. If the card is gone it is gone, so there is nothing to arrange before you sell and no service that will produce a replacement. And every genuine Rolex that has been sold on carries a card in somebody else's name, because Rolex will not change it. That is normal, Rolex says so itself, and a buyer treating it as a warning sign has it backwards.

The guarantee runs five years from purchase and it is conditional: sold by an Official Rolex Retailer, the card "completed in full" and "presented with the watch". Five years is longer than the two-year standard term Audemars Piguet publishes, though Audemars Piguet extends that to five on registration. A complete overhaul "takes a minimum of four to six weeks", priced by estimate after inspection, and no service price list is published at all.

Rolex does certify second-hand watches, but not for you. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned "vouches for the authenticity of second-hand Rolex watches that are at least two years old and offered for sale by our Official Retailers". That runs towards a retailer's stock, not towards an owner walking in with a watch. For an owner it has to be an independent bench, which is what our free authentication is.

Days rather than weeks, and what that speed costs you

Rolex is the quickest and most dependable of the seven to resell in Australia, and it is not close. Our ranking of how readily each brand changes hands puts it first, ahead of Cartier and Patek Philippe. Nobody publishes resale speed by brand in this market, so that ordering is our own book rather than data, and it measures liquidity, not value.

Speed cuts both ways. Less waiting is priced into a Rolex offer than into any other brand here, which helps you. It also means nearly every serious buyer in the country can price a Datejust without thinking hard, so there is no reason to accept the first number you are given, including ours.

What moves the figure, roughly in order: reference, year and metal taken together; whether the case has been polished until the lug edges have gone soft; whether the bracelet is original and complete; and whether the serial agrees with the card. Box and papers help. A Rolex without them still sells easily.

There is no Australian list price to argue from either. Rolex says suggested retail prices appear on its site "in most countries", yet neither of the two Submariner references we opened on its Australian site on 20 August 2026 showed a figure. What can be checked are dated auction results, and we have published every Australian one we could find in how much is my Rolex worth, down to two examples of Datejust reference 16234 that carried different estimates in the same catalogue and sold for different money on the same night.
