An extract that proves nothing, and a certificate only Le Brassus can issue

Audemars Piguet publishes two documents for owners and is careful about the difference between them. From its own service FAQ: "The Extract from the Archives (or Extrait de Registre) does not authenticate a watch. It only certifies that the case and movement numbers appear in our records." And then: "Please note that only a Certificate of Authenticity guarantees the authenticity of the watch."

The certificate has one issuer in the world: "Only our Manufacture in Le Brassus, Switzerland is entitled to deliver a Certificate of Authenticity", after the watch has been examined there. From here that means leaving the watch at a boutique, service centre or authorised retailer and letting it travel to Switzerland and back. AP publishes no price, no eligibility rule and no turnaround for either document, where Patek Philippe publishes all three, so ask what it costs and how long it takes before the watch leaves your hands.

On value AP answers for insurance only, and draws a line no other of the seven draws: "If your watch is more than 25 years old or if your watch is a limited edition: we will not be able to give any indicative price. We advise you to contact reputable auction houses to assess your watch."

Two more that bear on a sale. The warranty card "is provided only once when the watch is purchased from an official Audemars Piguet point of sale", and AP sends an owner back to that seller rather than to itself. And the AP Coverage Service is nominative: it "shall be activated again by the new owner in case of change of owner". Tell your buyer, or it lapses quietly at the handover. None of it replaces authentication by a certified watchmaker here, which happens before we pay.

Seen rarely here, so the paperwork carries more

An Audemars Piguet places fourth for speed of resale in Australia, and a couple of weeks is typical in our own dealing, the steel Royal Oak fastest. No published data ranks resale speed by brand in this country. That position is ours, drawn from what we have paid for and then had to place, and the full order sits with the other six.

The constraint is supply rather than demand. AP's store locator, read on 20 August 2026, listed a single Australian location, in Sydney, and classed it as a multi-brand point of sale rather than an AP boutique. There is no Australian version of the website either: audemarspiguet.com/au/ returns a page headed "Page not found - 404". Nor does a price appear where one should. On the Royal Oak 15513BA.OO.1320BA.01 page, checked the same day, the served page still carried the unfilled price placeholder from AP's own template instead of a figure. An owner here has nothing local to anchor to, and buyers see the brand so seldom that they want documents instead.

Which is why three things move an AP offer further than they would a Rolex: the papers, a complete bracelet with every spare link, and an unpolished case.
