Timing a Brisbane sale, and the hour Queensland does not keep

The gap that opens in October and closes in April

Queensland does not observe daylight saving. For roughly half the year Brisbane runs on the same clock as Sydney and Melbourne. From Sunday 4 October 2026, when the eastern states put their clocks forward, until Sunday 4 April 2027, Brisbane sits an hour behind them: 4pm here is 5pm there. During those months a Brisbane morning is the slot to use if you want something resolved the same day, and a late Brisbane afternoon is not.

When a buyer may take the watch from you at home

Queensland restricts this in a way no other state we checked does. Section 46 of the Second-hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 2003 (Qld) makes it an offence for a second-hand dealer to acquire property from a person at that person's home on a Sunday or a public holiday, or between 6pm and 7am on any other day, unless the person consented to it at least one day beforehand. A weekday daytime appointment avoids the question entirely, which is how we arrange them.

A certified watchmaker in Brisbane does the physical examination. Expect questions about title while you are there: section 47 requires a dealer, before acquiring second-hand property, to obtain your name and address, to verify them, and to ask whether you own the property, and if you do not, the owner's name and address and how you came by it. Queensland puts that question more directly than the other states, so have the answer ready if the watch was inherited or you are selling it for someone else.

Queensland's rules, and the one you can enforce yourself

General information about Queensland law, not legal advice. Second-hand dealing here sits under the Second-hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 2003 (Qld). A dealer needs a licence granted by the chief executive administering the Act, and a decision to refuse, cancel or impose conditions comes with a notice carrying review rights to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

• You have a statutory right to see the licence. Section 49 lets a person who disposes of second-hand property to a dealer ask to see it, immediately before the transaction or within 24 hours afterwards, and the dealer must show it. Asking costs you nothing, and a refusal tells you what you need to know.
• A luxury watch is caught three times over. The dictionary in schedule 3 defines nominated property to include property identifiable by a make, model or serial number or an inscription, jewellery, and precious metal. A steel Rolex with a serial is all three. No Queensland buyer has an argument that a wristwatch falls outside the Act.
• Seven clear working days. Section 44 requires nominated property to stay in the dealer's possession for that period. Clear working days is a longer stretch than the number suggests once a weekend or a public holiday falls inside it.
