How an Adelaide sale runs

South Australia is on Australian Central Standard Time and shifts its clocks with New South Wales and Victoria, so the gap to the eastern states is thirty minutes and it stays thirty minutes all year. Nothing changes between Adelaide and Sydney on 4 October 2026. In practice a four o'clock call from Adelaide still lands inside an eastern working day, which is not something a seller in Perth or Darwin can rely on.

Expect to sign the buyer's record, not only a receipt. Section 8(4) of the Second-hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 1996 (SA) requires a dealer to record an accurate description of the goods including type, brand, serial number and other distinguishing features, the date the goods were bought, and the full name and residential address of the person they were bought from together with the means of identification used to verify it. Section 8(5) then requires the dealer to obtain your written confirmation of that record. No other state turns it round this way: elsewhere the buyer writes it down and you take their word for what it says. Here you are asked to confirm it, so read it before you do.

South Australia does not license this at all

There is no second-hand dealer licence in South Australia. Under section 7(1) of the Second-hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 1996 (SA), a person proposing to carry on the business must give the Commissioner of Police written notice at least one month beforehand, and section 7(3) requires that notice to be verified by statutory declaration. Section 6 then works by disqualification, setting out who may not carry on the business, rather than by anyone being vetted and approved in advance.

The practical consequence is that there is no South Australian register to look anyone up in. A buyer here cannot show you a state licence, because the state does not issue one. If someone tells you they are licensed, the question to ask is which state issued it. Ours is Victorian: SHD-0017882.

So check what does exist. The ABN and the ACN on ABN Lookup. What the buyer is authorised as in the state it trades from. And section 10, which requires ten days to pass before second-hand goods are altered or parted with, cut to three days only where the dealer records and verifies the full name and address of the person the goods go to. That reduction exists in no other state, and ten days is a figure South Australia holds on its own.
