The one maker of the seven that will not look at your watch

Cartier publishes the bluntest position of the seven and it is a refusal. Its Australian care and repair FAQ says "You can be assured of authenticity by purchasing Cartier models from a Cartier boutique or authorised dealer" and, of anything else, "we are unable to provide information or authentication for items acquired outside of Cartier boutiques or authorised retailers". Audemars Piguet will issue a Certificate of Authenticity after examining a watch. Vacheron Constantin's Heritage Department issues three documents. Cartier says no.

Checked on 20 August 2026, its Australian service and warranty pages carry no archives extract, no certificate for a vintage piece and no serial lookup. Its watchmakers "consult the Maison's archives to replicate the original state of your creation as best as possible", but only inside Cartier's own restoration work. It prints a model reference beside every listing, in the CR form such as CRWSTA0137, and publishes nothing about where a serial number sits or what it encodes. Nor does it take any position on what an owner's watch is worth.

What it does publish is money, and it is the only Australian dollar service price we found anywhere across the seven. On its watchmaking services page a Complete Service starts "from AUD 700, subject to assessment" and "takes a minimum of three weeks"; restoring a vintage piece "requires a minimum of three months"; a battery service "costs AUD 100"; and the functional check Cartier recommends "every six years" is complimentary.

So the certificate issued at the point of sale and the purchase invoice are the only Cartier papers you will ever hold. Cartier Care extends the two-year international warranty to eight years, but its registration page would not load for us on 20 August 2026, so we cannot tell you whether that survives a change of owner. Ask before you assume it does. Everything else has to come from an independent watchmaker, which is what our free authentication is.

Second fastest of the seven, and the number sellers misread

Cartier places second for speed here, behind Rolex and ahead of Patek Philippe, and days to a fortnight is typical. That is what our own book shows rather than a published number, and the full order is set out with the other six. The reason sits on the jewellery side: a Tank or a Santos draws a jewellery buyer as well as a watch buyer, so the pool of people who will take one this week is wider than the brand's standing among watch collectors would suggest.

Three things move our number more than the model name does. Whether a diamond setting was done at the factory or added later, which is the largest single swing we see on this brand. The metal, because gold is priced partly by weight once a jewellery buyer is in the room. And the case size, since the small references sell to a narrower audience than the mid and large ones.
